A man from Kirbyville was injured Monday afternoon in a motorcycle wreck in Taney County.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says 42-year old Troy Darting ran off East Highway 76 south of Forsyth and struck a tree after losing control of his bike on a patch of gravel around 1:30 in the afternoon.

Darting sustained moderate injuries.  He was taken to a Springfield hospital for treatment.

But what the story does not say is that at this time Modot is doing a chip and seal job on that particular road, which in my opinion is completely moronic, based solely in part of the time of year it is and the amount of Motorcycle traffic that finds that particular stretch of road a very beautiful and scenic area to ride in. So for all you anti motorcycle people out there, this accident was not caused by the riders inabilities to control his vehicle.

The patch of gravel was the wonderful chip and seal that some genius decided was a good thing to do.

Well imagine that, it couldn't be because of the botch job on 76 hwy with gravel in large piles all up and down the highway could it ? I feel sorry for this guy, and by the way, does anyone know why the highway looks and feels so shabby ? Hopefully the highway dept gets this guys hospital bill

I think it's horrible that our nice smooth road has been ruined by this chip and seal. What a mess and waste of money.

Former Road and Bridge Administrator - 06/25/2012 12:06:21 PM This job is not really a paving job. It is a wearing surface referred to as a Chipseal. It is normally done on low traffic rural roads due to its relatively lower cost verses conventional paving. It is not uncommon to use this type of treatment in economic times like these. The treatment not only provides a valuable seal to the road preventing it from further deterioration it also helps with skid resistance qualities to help avoid slide-offs during inclement weather. There are several things the state can do to minimize the inconveniences of the loose gravel and dust. Constant sweeping during the initial few days would help considerably. There are other low cost alternatives that keep the road black and beautiful but are not used frequently in this general area. FogSeal,Microseal and several other tradenames that provide the same preventive attributes as a chipseal. I too know several people with chipped windshields from this work. The common sense answer is to slow down and that minimizes most chips from flying but not all of them. I commend the City of Branson for applying these cost saving alternatives to chipseal in their street network. MoDot is doing the best they can with the severe reduction in their budget. They were cut significantly from 1.2B to about 700M Statewide. SO I say...........Give em a BREAK/BRAKE.......but what do I know?

I am Brandi darting the passenger/wife on the motorcycle. My husband was life flighted from this accident and is in critical condition now and on life support fighting for his life at mercy saint johns. By no means is his condition moderate. If anyone's condition is moderate it's mine. If the DOT would have done their job right and would have made it a safe highway for motorcyclists this would have never happened. This was not rider error.

I understand budget cuts but I am angered at the lack of common sence shown by the workers who left so much gravel on a sloped 90 degree turn which caused the accident. As I drove by this terrible accident I saw this gravel and could not believe it was left there. Why did I see a sweeper crew sweeping it up apparently minuts after the wreck-should it have been sweept up BEFORE??? I am also sickened by this news media outlet reporting that the bike riders sustained moderate injuries-if so why did i see 2 ambulances a helicopter and emergency personell all over the place - this tells me his and her injuries must have been pretty bad. If you read Brandy Dartings post you will understand why she might be unhappy with MIS-REPORTING OF THE FACTS - this is the last thing she should be concerned with. I hope and pray for speedy, speedy 100% recovery for the both of them....

As stated, the information is from the accident report by the Missouri Highway Patrol. These reports are available online at http://www.mshp.dps.mo.gov/HP68/search.jsp. If we are made aware of any change in that information, we would be happy to update the story.

It is so sad that people/media who have no clue what or how this happened have the nerve to comment on a story like this. Like Brandi Darting stated, he in no way sustained moderate injuries. That chip and seal stuff is always an accident waiting to happen. I too live in a Rural area where they use this on our roads. No matter how much you slow down, you still end up with a mess of tar on your vehicle, chips in the paint, etc. Troy was not the one in error here at all. The state needs to re-evaluate the use of that crap!

If they would not have put the chip and seal on our road thi would not have happened this was no way Troys fault
Hate Chipseal - 06/28/2012 5:23:55 PM
I to hate chipseal, it chips paint and throws tar on my vehicle. It also throws chips into my windshield when "following to close behind" other vehicles. When I drive on it I realize what the effects are and "Slow down". Single vehicle accident usually spells Driving unsafe for conditions. I wish more people took accountability for their actions vs. playing the blame game.

My appologies, I honestly failed to wish Troy a quick and full recovery from his accident. And thoughts are with his friends and family.
